Talahi Island is located on the eastern side of Savannah and features some of the most desirable Savannah GA real estate in the entire city. The typical Talahi resident has a significantly higher income than the average U.S. citizen, and the waterfront access provides breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring South Carolina. Home buyers looking for an upscale location with plenty of potential will want to start their search in Talahi Island.
Talahi Island: An Upscale Neighborhood
Many of Talahi Island’s homes have waterfront access, which connects to the Wilmington River and Wassaw Sound. The neighborhoods are almost entirely residential with only a community center for social events, but the lack of shops and restaurants in the immediate area provides Talahi Island residents with privacy, peace, and quiet.
Residents can hop on Interstate 80 and drive east for half a mile to dine at upscale restaurants like Ele Fine Fusion, and families can check out all of the fun activities at Islands Miniature Golf and Games. A short five minute drive away lies the Islands Mall Shopping Center in Wilmington with a grocery store and other shops and restaurants.
Talahi Island Demographics
Due to its wealth of prime real estate, Talahi Island property values are much higher than in other parts of the city. Savannah real estate company realtors can show prospective home buyers multimillion dollar mansions with waterfront access, pools, tennis courts, and other high-end amenities.
The median property value is close to $220,000 or about twice the city’s average. Residents who move out to Talahi Island typically want to escape the bustle of downtown Savannah while remaining close enough to enjoy its vibrant nightlife and culture. At $72,000, Talahi Island’s median household income is about 40 percent higher than the U.S. average.
Talahi Island Traffic
Despite its close proximity to Interstate 80, Talahi Island itself almost never experiences poor traffic conditions. Besides I-80 and Quarterman Dr, there is no way on or off the island. Thousands of Savannah residents pass through on their way to work every day, but there aren’t any shops, restaurants, or other attractions to draw big crowds.
Nearly all of Talahi Island’s residents commute to work in another part of the city, and 75 percent of residents work in management, professional, financial, or office jobs. Although numerous families live in multimillion dollar homes, no household income exceeds $500,000 a year.
Talahi Island Schools
Families send their kids to either Marshpoint or May Howard Elementary School. Coastal Middle School and Islands High School both serve multiple neighborhoods, but all schools are located within five minutes of Talahi Island.
Talahi Island is surrounded by deep waterways except for a short stretch of shallow water next to Wilmington Island, and private docks stretch out from the shore on all sides. Savannah real estate company representatives usually direct home buyers who enjoy boating and fishing to Talahi Island for its water access.
Due to the recession, the community has experienced negative population growth in recent years, dropping the population to 1,248. However, only 2.7 percent of the island’s properties are currently vacant compared to 11.4 percent for the entire country. Nearly 60 percent of Talahi Island’s residents are currently single.
